What Does An Autism Evaluation Consist Of? How Long Does It Take?

My two year old is getting evaluated for autism and I want to know what to expect. He is already in speech therapy. His speech therapist said she sees no signs of autism but I still want him tested no matter what anyone says.

They will observe him to see if there are any signs of autism, they will want to see how he reacts to different things, when my nephew was tested the neurologist literally watched him then diagnosed, so I would bet each case is different and will be handled as such. My heart goes out to you, good luck.

Hi Hun.. my twin son Thomas was 3 when he was taken to an assessment unit it was a 6 week look at him and how he was and acted, within a few sessions he was diagnosed with severe autism, he is nine now and still non verbal and still in nappies, i have to say autism isn’t just about the lack of speech its a lot more than this, lack of eye contact , no interest in playing with other children head banging limited diet also can he a factor, you say you want him tested no matter what, what do you mean by this ? Thomas had a speech therapist before he was assest at the child development center and even she said she thought he had autism but its not down to them they just pass on to the right people what she seen during the session, age two is very Young to be assest that is why (depending where your from) they like to leave it to three as speech is still developing, if you would like to know more email me i have added videos in the link below that shows thomas and how he is
    best of luck

this link below is an on line assessment tool- it will tally a scorehttp://www.childbrain.com/pddassess.html
this is the types of things an evaluator with be looking for.
if you feel there is an autism relation- I cant tell you how many people ignored signs and told me the same thing, he cant have autism. well his final diagnoses was severe autism.
it doesn’t hurt for a full eval, check with insurance and don’t rely on the school district (they cant legally diagnose in most states)
if you have a gut feeling- you’ll need to be persistent. not all doctors will be honest when it comes to a diagnoses and may tell you the same thing.
when my son was medically assessed, it took 3 to 4 hrs- some kids they can split the times up so it’s not so long.
a speech delay does not mean autism either. there are many other things that can cause a speech delay
    good luck
